Cennydd Jones, a lecturer at Aberystwyth University and a part-time farmer will be joined by Dr Iwan Owen. Iwan is a well-known name to many former Aberystwyth University Agriculture students, where he was a grassland management lecturer for forty years before he took a well-deserved retirement in 2021. Lamb, mutton and wool, those are the products we are familiar with when farming sheep in Wales. Now, we should add sheep's milk to the list, as we see 14 farmers this year milking sheep. Pasture will be the focus of this podcast in the company of Cennydd Jones, lecturer in grassland management at Aberystwyth University and also a part-time farmer. Cennydd will be joined by Alan Lovatt a grass breeder throughout his career and now does consultancy work for Germinal which is based in Gogerddan near Aberystwyth.
With over 75% of the Welsh landscape being grassland of one kind or another, and considering that grassland is a vitally important part of the diet of cattle, sheep, horses and even goats and alpacas, grassland is undoubtedly a key part of the jigsaw when it comes to tackling climate change, feeding the population and increasing profits on our farms, and we will touch on all these important aspects during the next 20 minutes.

Hendre Llwyn y Maen is a hill farm of approximately 400 acres with additional in buy land rising up to 1100ft above sea level . This podcast will be an opportunity to understand a bit more about the Sustainable Farming Scheme proposals and how the scheme could operate in the context of a real sheep farm. We’ll be focusing on the Universal Actions for benchmarking, animal health and biosecurity elements in particular as we consider the ongoing sustainable production of food within the proposals. All Welsh farmers are encouraged to complete the SFS codesign survey to help Welsh Government develop the SFS proposals to make sure they work on the ground. In this episode our Red Meat Technical Officer Lisa Roberts revisit's Marc Jones and his family at Trefnant Hall, Welshpool. Marc was deservedly rewarded last year with the British Grassland Society 'grassland farmer of the year award. We discuss the drivers to change to a forage based system, including a focus on suitable stock class and breed and how fodder beet plays an important role of reducing wintering cost. Something a little bit different within this episode as we're guided by leader of the Agri Academy, Llyr Derwydd and members of the Business and Innovation programme as they visit Bilboa and the Basque region. It's a whistle-stop tour of the diverse farming practices within the region, from the more conventional dairy farm located in Laukiz to a vineyard and a tomato producer in Arrankudiaga. They group also visited Mutriku, a seaside village where the first wave electricity plant in Europe is located. The Limouisn breed of cattle was first imported to the UK from France 50 years ago. Since then, the breed has grown in popularity enormously, becoming the most popular beef sire in the UK. In this episode, we meet Huw Jones who farms with his wife Meinir at Bryn Farm near Cardigan. This week the team have been back recording on location and have visited Mountjoy Farm near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire; one of Farming Connect’s demonstration sites. Mountjoy is a dairy farm run by second generation farmer William Hannah and his family. William’s objective is to build an “enjoyable and profitable business” and, in this episode, he talks about some of the projects that he’s been involved with as a demonstration site including methods of introducing superior genetics into the dairy herd and ways of reducing the use of nitrogen fertiliser inputs.
