Ear to the Ground’ is a brand-new podcast, the first of its kind to be available in both Welsh and English, that will share technical information, advice, support and inspiration to the farming community in Wales. Mae “Clust i’r Ddaear” yn bodlediad newydd sbon, y cyntaf o’i math i fod ar gael yn Gymraeg a Saesneg, fydd yn rhannu gwybodaeth dechnegol, cyngor, cefnogaeth ac ysbrydoliaeth i’r gymuned amaeth yng Nghymru.

#72 - Tree planting working for a 500 cow dairy unit at Hendre Llwyn y Maen

Hendre Llwyn y Maen is a hill farm of approximately 400 acres with additional in buy land rising up to 1100ft above sea level . Robin Crossley, the owner, is a keen environmentalist and values the woodlands as an important component of the farm providing game shooting, shelter for stock and wildlife habitat. In this conversation, Robin explains the mindset of how the tree planting began and how it's developed to be an integral part of the farm business. Also in the conversation we have Sam Pearson, the farm Manager and Farming Connect Mentor talking about the farm's business objectives and the value of trees to the farming system.

#71 - Numerous challenges concern new entrants to the egg industry

Cath Price is Farming Connects Lead Dairy and Poultry Technical Officer. At home she also farms with her husband Dan, 20 minutes South of Newtown and have recently invested in a laying hen unit. Their new shed, and first flock was placed in December 2020 and the second flock this August.
Like most other egg producers, they've felt the pressure of inflationary costs seen earlier this year. Cath also invited Ian Jones, MA VetMB MRCVS Director at Hafren Vets onto the podcast to look at what the current situation on Avian Infliuenza is in the UK and more specifically for us here in Wales.

Bydd y podlediad hwn yn gyfle i ddeall ychydig mwy am gynigion y Cynllun Ffermio Cynaliadwy a sut y gallai’r cynllun weithredu yng nghyd-destun fferm ddefaid go iawn. Byddwn yn canolbwyntio ar y camau gweithredu cyffredinol ar gyfer meincnodi, iechyd anifeiliaid a bioddiogelwch yn benodol wrth i ni ystyried y broses barhaus o gynhyrchu bwyd yn gynaliadwy o fewn y cynigion. Mae holl ffermwyr Cymru’n cael eu hannog i gwblhau’r arolwg SFS i helpu Llywodraeth Cymru i ddatblygu cynigion yr SFS i wneud yn siŵr eu bod yn gweithio ar lawr gwlad. #70 - Sustainable Farming Scheme- Delving deeper into the detail

This podcast will be an opportunity to understand a bit more about the Sustainable Farming Scheme proposals and how the scheme could operate in the context of a real sheep farm. We’ll be focusing on the Universal Actions for benchmarking, animal health and biosecurity elements in particular as we consider the ongoing sustainable production of food within the proposals.  All Welsh farmers are encouraged to complete the SFS codesign survey to help Welsh Government develop the SFS proposals to make sure they work on the ground.  The survey can be found [here] and closes on 31 October 2022.

#69 - Preparing for tupping with vet Tom Searle

In the last episode of the podcast we heard about the three 'P's of sustainable farming. This time we'll here about the three 'T's- teeth, testicles and toes with vet Tom Searle as he discusses a very important procedure 'The Ram MOT' .  As we enter the breeding season, our guest presenter Tom Searle BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS talks us through the fundamentals. 

Tom graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2014, and now works at South Wales Farm vets. He enjoys all aspects of farm work, especially beef and sheep fertility/productivity. His special interests are with bull and ram fertility, as well as building his experience with embryo transfer.

cattle farmer and a farm business consultant for Precision Grazing Ltd. Rhys had the privilege of catching up with Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the year Aled Evans at Rest Farm near Whitland. #67 - Forage based regenerative farming with Marc Jones at Trefnant Hall, Welshpool

In this episode our Red Meat Technical Officer Lisa Roberts revisit's Marc Jones and his family at Trefnant Hall, Welshpool. Marc was deservedly rewarded last year with the British Grassland Society 'grassland farmer of the year award. We discuss the drivers to change to a forage based system, including a focus on suitable stock class and breed and how fodder beet plays an important role of reducing wintering cost. Lisa and Marc visit areas of the farm to experience the new diverse lays approach and their potential benefits and challenges, including mitigating the challenge against high fertiliser cost and extreme weather patterns. This episode is one not to be missed.

#66 - Business & Innovation in the Basque Region of Spain

Something a little bit different within this episode as we're guided by leader of the Agri Academy, Llyr Derwydd and members of the Business and Innovation programme as they visit Bilboa and the Basque region. It's a whistle-stop tour of the diverse farming practices within the region, from the more conventional dairy farm located in Laukiz to a vineyard and a tomato producer in Arrankudiaga. They group also visited Mutriku, a seaside village where the first wave electricity plant in Europe is located. This trip certainly inspired the next generation of farming and forestry innovators and entrepreneurs in Wales.
